Last week the Bandera Bulldogs varsity basketball team took on the Devine Warhorses in non-district play. The game got off to a slow start in the first quarter with both teams scoring only 6 points each.
In the second quarter, Devine doubled their score to 12 points, with the Bulldogs following close behind with 10. At halftime, the score was close at 18-16 Devine.
The Bulldogs came out with a vengeance in the second half, scoring 17 points and holding Devine to14 points offensively.
In the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs continued to light up the scoreboard with 26 points. Devine was no match for the Bulldogs as they came up short with only 18 points in the final quarter, making the final score Bulldogs 59, Devine 50.
Leading scorers for the Bulldogs were: junior Jeff Jensen with 15, senior Zach Young with 14, and senior Brice Shearhart with 9.
Bandera dominated in the rebound category with senior Derek Draper leading with 9 and senior Sean Scott leading the assists with 3. Senior Tyler Stevens also pitched in with two steals. After the game, Head Coach Brett Morris said, “ We started slow but had a great finish. Getting Zach and Brice back from injuries helps the team a lot.”
In the Bulldog’s second game of the week, they squared off with the Pearsall Mavericks. The Bulldogs got off to an early start with 16 points in the first quarter, to Pearsall’s 9.
In the second quarter, the Bulldogs mustered up 17 points, but Pearsall followed close behind with 14 points, making the score at half 33-23 Bandera.
Coming out of the locker room, Bandera took off in the second half outscoring Pearsall 20-14. When the buzzer rang at the end of the game, Bandera was on top in a 53-37 victory.
“We were able to work on some thing for district this week. The boys did a great job of executing the game plan,” Coach Morris said about the victory.
Leading scorers for the Bulldogs were: Draper with 13, junior Eric Pompa with 10, and junior Gabe O’Dell with 8. Draper led the rebounds with 8 and steals with 2. Shearhart led the assists with 3.
At the end of the week, Bandera had a 6-8 record. The Bulldogs traveled to Hondo last night to take on the Owls, but the final score was not available at press time.
