Last month, eighteen students from BHS’s Art 1 and Drawing 2 classes competed in a “fantasy of butterflies” contest sponsored by the Emily Ann Theatre in Wimberley and junior Jenna Dobson placed third and freshman Ashley Montes received honorable mention. Both students’ artwork was displayed at the festival.
With over 3,000 students in the competition, placing was quite impressive. “The girls created (their) butterflies from blank paper and used their imagination,” art teacher Diane Bray said. “This is our first time to enter this contest, so we’re excited!”
“I was really surprised, but excited as well,” Dobson said. “With that many students competing, it’s a real honor.”
Bray also spotlighted the artwork of sophomore Pahola Aguilar and freshman Aryn Morris, “They also had beautiful butterflies.”
“I did not qualify because my butterflies were too small,” Aguilar said.
The Emily Ann Theatre & Gardens hosts a Butterfly Festival as an annual tradition. The contest resulted from one family’s desire to take a “tragic situation and turn it into a ‘magic’ situation,” according to the festival’s website. Ann and Norm Rolling lost their daughter in an automobile accident and with the help of the Wimberley community, they built an outdoor theatre in honor of their daughter’s love of theatre.
