The Coxsackie-Athens Board of Education has many plans and ideas for the upcoming 2012-13 school budget, but with some important programs and staff possibly being cut, the Board is trying to figure out how can their goals be achieved. One of them is called a “three year plan.” A main point of this plan is to have graduation rates rise to 90% (they are currently at about 80%).

However, many people during the recent public input session of the board meeting questioned the logic behind cutting Academic Intervention Services (AIS), teachers, and teacher’s assistants, among other staff, while at the same time wanting a higher graduation rate. The Board and superintendent Mr. Squier said that their focus is on creating more programs. When it came time for public input, about 15 people spoke and nearly every one of those 15 spoke about keeping staff over adding programs.

A big issue that night was taxes; the Board wants to keep them low, but many people would be happy to pay higher taxes if that meant that their children were to receive a better education. Many public speakers were not fans of phasing out the French program, or cutting the technical support C-A is so lucky to have here.

Another problem that many audience members found with this proposal, was the large amount of money that the district would be spending on new technology such as iPads and SmartBoards. They argued that keeping staff and classes is more important than new technology, and that buying new technology is not an immediate necessity. Many parents and staff who spoke made a point to say that it was very strange to cut our technology personnel and buy loads of new gadgets. Needless to say, there is still much controversy over what the budget should and should not include.

There will be a third budget meeting at EJ Arthur Elementary School on April 17th when a third proposal will be made. When a new budget is finally proposed, that budget will go up for vote. If it is shot down, then another budget will be proposed with less tax levy, translating to more cuts. If the second budget is shot down, then there will be zero tax levy, translating into massive cuts. If you are of voting age, you should definitely vote on this, for the sake of your peers. If not, inform your parents about what’s happening. Make sure they understand the consequences of a lower tax levy and to be knowledgeable of the budget before they vote.
