Leslie Gonzaga, Andrea Montes de Oca, Ashley Sims and Ashley Georges (from left to right) are participating in the Smack Mellon art internship program.
Looking for the next Picasso? Well, look no further. SJHS seniors Andrea Montesdeoca, Ashley Georges, Ashley Sims, and Leslie Gonzaga are participating in an art internship program that promises to take them inside the world of artists from all over New York.

The Smack Mellon art internship gives students the opportunity to visit various artists’ studios so they can learn about their different art projects. By traveling around the city and working with them side by side, they will experience what it is like to be an artist here in New York.

Mrs. Cofta said an important factor in recommending students for this internship was that they needed to be responsible enough to show up for every meeting and be able to represent the school well.

“We tried to find students who would be a good fit and are interested in art,” she said.

Andrea Montes de Oca added that “Ms. Cofta approached those she felt were most qualified and luckily I was one of them.”

Getting this internship was not as easy as it seems. Ms. Cofta’s recommendation was only the first step towards obtaining it. The girls had to go through an interview process in which they showed the art work they had done over the past years. Once this process was over, they were informed they had been accepted.

Students in this program seem to be very excited about this opportunity.

“I am looking forward to working closely with established artists,” expressed Ashley Sims. “I see it as an exiting opportunity to see and learn new things.”

Not only did I get chosen for this Internship, I have learned a lot from it. My time being at Smack Mellon viewing art, and artist was a great experience. I have recently gone on their 1st trip along with my fellow Senior classmates as well as other interns from different schools. We were accompanied by Mrs. Cofta. The trip took place at the Dia Beacon Museum & Storm King Art Center.
