Why would anybody spend $300 on a pair of headphones? According to society, Beats, created by rap artist Dr. Dre, are the best headphones out there that money can buy.
Their superior bass and sound quality trumps those of other headphones. “They have the most amazing bass out of all the headphones that I’ve ever had,” said freshman Gary Martinez.
There are two different styles of Beats. One is the over-the-ear headphones and the other is the earbuds. Martinez owns the over-the-ear Beats and admits that he loves them.
Consumers like Beats for their look, bass and sound quality, but there are critics that think it’s completely absurd that someone would spend over $10 on headphones.
“The only reason that they are so expensive is because they are endorsed by Dr. Dre,” said freshman Samuel Mace. According to Mace, if it wasn’t for Dre’s involvement, they would be cheaper.
“They’re just headphones. Nothing is special about them,” said freshman Aaron Anchie.
Junior Jericho Harris agrees with Anchie. “I’m not going to spend over $100 on something I’ll shove in my ear to produce sounds,” said Harris.
Several students own these expensive headphones and can be seen around campus with them. “I know about 15-20 people that own Beats and I think that they are all insane,” said Anchie.
Do people buy these for their sound quality or for the name of Dr. Dre? Senior Destree Ruiz thinks it’s for the name. “People only buy these to look cool and to attempt to flash around their money to show everybody that they can afford $300 headphones,” she said.
