The 2009-2010 Suburban League season has come to an end for all sports this year. Mayfair had numerous sports qualify for CIF.
Fall sports included: girls volleyball, girls golf, girls tennis, football, and cross country.
Girls Volleyball had an overall season of 18-8. They qualified for CIF and made it to the quarter finals losing to Mayfield 3-0. Seniors graduating are: Audrey Utupo, Sarah McFadden, Rachel Fisher and Diane Samia.
Girls golf came in second in league with 7-3. The only one to make it to CIF was Jessica Turner who lost in the first round. Turner was also a member of the all league team. The only seniors graduating this year are Kayla Williams and Raquel Ramirez.
Girls tennis had an extraordinary season finishing with an overall record of 14-5 and a Suburban League record of 10-2 only losing to their league rivals; Cerritos High. They made it to the second round in CIF to lose against Santa Clara, 2-16. Seniors graduating are: Elizabeth Ly, Victoria Lim, Kristine De La Paz, Lauren Ross, Samantha Spawton, Caroline Quan, and Danielle Luciano.
Football earned third in league with an overall record of 4-2. They also made it and lost in their first game of CIF against Segerstrom, 43-35.
Cross Country this year had a productive season. Girls varsity came in 4th and Boys varsity came in 5th. The only person on the team that qualified for CIF was Brandon Taylor with an impressive 3 mile time of 15:45. Which earned him 2nd in Suburban League. Seniors are: Lauren Thompson, Donald Quigley, Mathew Turner, Kurt Alvarado and Steven Martinez.
Winter sports included: boys wrestling, girls wrestling, boys soccer, girls soccer, boys basketball and girls basketball.
Boys wrestling had a league record of 4-2. They were very inexperienced this year but they hope to use their now experienced wrestlers to improve and carry the team next year. Joseph Hernandez, Mario Molina, Efren Uriarte, Andrew Moschos, Kurt Alvarado, Thomas Greenwood, Donnie McMihelk, and Gio Flores all made it to CIF.
Girls’ wrestling doesn’t wrestle against the usual Suburban League schools, they drive to remote schools to compete in tournaments and although all the girls go to CIF two special wrestlers made it far: Crystal Espinoza and Chanelle Alarcon. Espinoza earned first place in CIF for 165 lbs. while Alarcon earned third place for 126 lbs.
Boys soccer had an overall league record of 6-5-1 They were 4th in league. They lost in the first round of CIF to South, 2-0. The team was filled with experience. The seniors are: Oscar Gomez, Jonathan Fajardo, Alejandro Martin, Derrick Gonzalez, Jonathan Martin DelCampo, Dominic Sepúlveda, Danny Flores, Nick Frausto and Victor Villeda.
Girls soccer finished their season with an overall record of 17-4-3. Their league record was 10-2. They lost in their second game in CIF to Bloomington, 2-1. Seniors are: Jessika Oseguera, Katy Swart, Maggie Avelar, Madison Trapp, Cassidy Vander Molen, Jessie VanderBaan, Lauren Beck, Grace Van Winkle, and Briana Quintana.
Boys basketball had an overall league record of 10-2. They were league champions. The boys made it to the third round of CIF and lost to Eisenhower 78-59. Seniors this year are: Brenton Owens, Tim Douglas and Brandon Reynolds.
Girls basketball had an overall league record of 12-0 and an overall record of 18-10. The girls were also league champions. They qualified for CIF but only made it to the second game, losing to Beverly Hills 74-49.Seniors this year are: Kelsey Gonzales, Alyssa Abayata, Marianne Gonzalez, Breanne Bunch, Diedra Adkinson, Kayla Spawton, and Chidiogo Ofoegbu.
Spring sports include: softball, baseball, track, boys tennis, boys golf and boys volleyball.
Softball finished with an overall record of 20-5 and an overall league record of 12-0. They were first in league and qualified for CIF. They made it to quarter finals and lost to Temecula Valley, 2-1. The seniors are: Patty Banda, Kristen Jaeger, Jessica Roper, Mahrisch Medina, Veronica Perez, Candice Lopez, Kirsten Shay, Briana Quintana, ans Sara Rivera.
Baseball had an overall record of 20-6 and an overall league record of 9-3. Their biggest challenges were Bellflower High and La Mirada High. They came in 2nd place in league. Seniors are: Ray Patchen, Derrick Garcia, Nolan Smith, Jacob Roper, Cesar Chavez, Alex Sack, Kevin Lopez, and Ryan Lapastora.
Boys tennis had an overall record of 9-8 and a league record of 8-4. Senior , Tyler Konishi bids farewell to his fellow teammates. Although Boys tennis didn’t make it as far as they wished they hope for the best next year. They made it to the wild card game in CIF but lost.
Boys golf had an overall record of 7-5 they recieved 3rd place in league. Two players that made it to CIF were Matt Fliss and Josh Iverson. Fliss was done after the first round and Iverson passed the first round and ended up being ranked in the top 50 in southern California.
Boys volleyball had an overall record of 16-11. The boys lost in the first round of CIF to Santiago Corona, 3-2. The seniors were: Josh Livingston adn Tyler Diaz.
On June 10, at the Suburban League meeting, Mayfair recieved second place overall, just missing the Iron Man title. This takes into consideration all sports, all year. Thank You to all our athletes for making Mayfair proud.
