College is expensive; apply for scholarships [ArticleImageHyperLink] Advertising Thursday, December 09, 2010 By Jessica Wu Every senior should apply for financial aid, ranging from scholarships to grants, student loans, and the FAFSA. This year’s financial aid workshops have not yet been set up, but they’re estimated to be scheduled for mid-October. In the workshops, students come in and start filling out forms and applications, such as the FAFSA and forecaster, a pre-application that helps students get the feel for filling out college applications. They are intended to help students understand and get used to the process of applying for college. The workshops are set throughout November and December, and are greatly beneficial to seniors applying to college. Both students and parents can come in to sit down with the experts and go through the application from A-Z. Mrs. Bowens, head of the College and Career Center, stated that Ruth Rodriguez, a UC representative, is set to come to Mayfair to talk to students on the tentative date of Nov. 28 during 5th period. With the current state of the economy, the UC schools are sending out less representatives to prospective students, so Rodriguez is the person to talk to if you’re interested in a UC school. “Now is the time to research scholarships and financial aid. The big one is the Coca Cola scholarship,” said Bowens. The Coca Cola scholarship is one of the more general and broad scholarships with basic requirements, which are stated on the Coca Cola website. There are all kinds of scholarships available to different kinds of students, from scholarships for being a twin to scholarships for being tall. Go to Google and type in keywords that apply to you, your interests, ethnicity, or background, in order to find scholarships that are best suited to you.
