During the pit of a disaster the Murrow community was truly a community.

That’s because students and teachers reached out and offered overwhelming support to the victims of Hurricane Sandy.

"It breaks my heart to see people I know lose everything," said sophomore Samantha Smalls. "I love that the school is getting involved."

Clothing, first aid kits, as well as non perishable foods are being collected by various groups in the school.

Neighborhood churches have also pitched in and donated jackets and hats. Donations are still being accepted in room 158, and according to parent coordinator Ms. Rose Dasch, students are welcome to come in and take whatever they need.

"I've seen so many students that lost everything" said Ms. Dasch. "I felt it was my duty to help."

Though the storm itself has ended the physical damage and the emotional refuge that it has left on some of Murrowites is evident.

"The initial drive is over," said Ms. Dasch."People need items to clean up their houses like garbage bags brooms and things like that."
Students are also making it their duty to get involved.

SeniorTiffany Chao, a member of executive board of National Honor Society, has been selling Hurricane Sandy relief bracelets to help the Gerritsen Beach volunteer fire department, which is the only volunteer fire department in Brooklyn.

"I see how people reacted and how it touched them when I helped out,”  said Chao. "It made me want to raise money for supplies to give to them."

The school has also started a Hurricane Sandy relief fund that is collecting monetarily donations via the school website.

"School is like our second home and Murrow is a family," said senior Sasha Saul. "So when one of us is in need of anything whether it’s a hug or some money we are there to help."
