Moody High School has held the Mr. and Miss Moody pageant for nearly 25 years now. It has gone from being sponsored by The Blue Devil Marching Band to Mrs. Jill Yancy, teacher. Now, the pageant is currently sponsored by Mrs. April Bishop, teacher. From its past years the pageant has come many milestones. For underclassmen, the pageant just consists of a beauty walk. For seniors, the categories are: Beauty walk, interview, academics, and a resume the students write. For freshman through eleventh grade, only female students may participate. For seniors, male and female are welcome.
The scoring for seniors is 30 points for beauty, 30 points interview, 30 points academic, and 10 points resume. The questions for the interview come from the resume and political questions. Contestants vote on congeniality for their grade. Each grade has a congeniality winner. The junior and senior class has a talent portion, which you don’t have to be in the pageant to participate in talent, all though a student may if they wish.
The entry fee is $25 and $10 to enter the photogenic competition. The admission to the pageant is $5. The only requirements is that you have formal wear and that you attend the meeting.
The Farah Seals Character and leadership award is chosen by Bishop and a group of other teachers who read over students papers that tells how they have shown character. They pick the student with the most qualities of character.
Mrs. Bishop’s favorite part of the pageant is “getting to pick the theme.” She likes to decorate the stage and see all the kids dressed up. Our reigning Mr. and Miss. Moody High School is Cody Brasher and Scotti Harbuck, who will hopefully come back to crown the 2010 Mr. and Miss. Moody High school.
The pageant usually has around 70 contestants, although, last year it only had about 55. Mrs. Bishop says, “I hope to have more senior boys participate.” Usually about 8-10 boys participate.
This year, Tyler Hamby, senior, will be participating in the pageant. Last year Hamby was an escort. Hamby said being an escort was so much fun and would suggest any underclassmen boys to volunteer to escort. Tyler says “I decided to participate in the pageant this year because it is a great learning experience. Tyler says more boys should participate because, “The interview portion is great practice for life. The experience can help boost your self confidence in job interviews.”
The pageant will take place on October 10, 2009 at 7 p.m. in the gym. Bishop’s hopes for the pageant, are” No one falls off the stage! Bishop said laughing. “ That everyone is happy with their performance and shows great sportsmanship!”
