It's true that many moms would prefer a late start and breakfast in bed over waking up and running. However, the annual Mother's Day Mile, on May 9, may convince many to make an exception.
Not only is it an easy one mile (as opposed to most races, which are at least three), it's also for a good cause. The Mother's Day Mile benefits the Advocate Safehouse Project.
The Advocate Safehouse Project is dedicated to helping women, children, and even men who face domestic violence. "We help clients who are in that situation," Karen Iverson, Advocate Safehouse Community Outreach and Volunteer Coordinator said.
All  proceeds go to education. "Promoting education is the best way to prevent domestic violence. It even says so in our mission statement," Iverson said.
As if that weren't enough reason to run, all participants receive a rose and a slice of apple pie at the end of the race.
"I ran the race last year, just for fun," sophomore Jenna Sobke said. "It's cool, and not too hard. But I ended up walking with my mom, since it is Mother's Day."
Racers will see quite the sight of Glenwood with a loop that begins and ends at Glenwood Medical Associates (GMA). GMA also happens to sponsor the race, and has done so for the past 11 years.
Pre-registration begins April 10 and ends May 6. The cost is 15 dollars per person or 55 dollars per family (according to active.com).
The race will go in waves;  the first wave is children at 1:15, then men and women under 40 at 1:35 p.m., men and women 40 or older at 1:55 p.m., and walkers at 2:10 p.m.
People interested in participating should be there on May 9, at 1 p.m. for the race, and shouldn't forget a mom!
