Guess who won the first State Championship at North Shore? Here is a hint… "Marco…Polo…"
A lot of people may not know that North Shore High School’s first State Championship was won by the girl’s 1988 water polo team—not football.
Aquatics have come a long way from only having 10-20 swimmers on a team to now consisting of more than 40 swimmers. There are now four class periods dedicated to the swimmers, with first and second period dedicated to the varsity swimmers, and seventh and eighth period for the junior varsity swimmers.
In the past five years or so, swimming has steadily grown. Last year, the boy’s swimming and diving team won district due to Head Coach Angie Fain’s commitment to the team. She proves that commitment by emphasizing dedication as key in becoming better in whatever someone is trying to do.
Going on her seventh year here at North Shore, Coach Fain has definetely shown her dedication. What has kept her here for so many years is her passion for wanting to create champions.
"To be able to develop a player from scratch and teach them things they never thought they can do is a very exciting feeling," said Coach Fain.
Her job may be a little harder than most may think because the swimming team is unique in that most of the athletes on the roster do not have any prior background before joining the team.
Luis Aguilar joined as a sophomore with no swim team experience. He is now a major point scorer on varsity
"Luis had no swimming background whatsoever, but with much determination and hardwork, he has now become one of the fastest swimmers on the team," Varsity Captain Densie Belze said.
The community now has all year round swimming programs at the natatorium for students. It is a great opportunity to get an upper hand on the competition and just a great way to have fun.
