The 40th year of celebrating the Earth. Founded by Gaylord Nelson in 1970, Earth Day is a day to teach and raise awareness about the Earth. In the Northern Hemisphere, this day is celebrated in the spring, April 22; for the Southern, autumn.
It began in a time of many revolutions. Protests, Gay Rights lead by Harvey Milk, the Civil Rights, and more. Peace and love was important to the hippies. Woodstock had just barely happened. An appropriate time to come forth with a day celebrating the Earth. Everyone loved this day. However, this day is not as important as it was or should be.
"The most important environmental issue is one that is rarely mentioned, and that is the lack of a conservation ethic in our culture." - Gaylord Nelson
IN modern times, the only people who really know about this day, or celebrate it is environmentalists or hippies. To raise awareness, many people have decided to go naked in San Francisco.
"I saw a sign when I was there on my Art History trip and it told everyone to walk around naked on Earth Day." said Senior Josh Wolfe.
Perhaps people should not go that far to nudity, that may scare some children, but something should be done to let people know that Earth Day is a real Holiday that is now celebrated in more countries.
Although World Environment Day created by the United Nations is for the world and is celebrated on June 5, many countries have decided to take on our little holiday. Cool. That should make the Earth cleaner if everyone knows about it.
On this awesome day, I ask Alta High School to pick up your litter or just garbage lying around. Plant something (if you can it is a little rainy). Do something to help make our Earth a better place!
“Earth Day is a day of remembrance of the wonderful green Earth we once had. It is a day for imaginations to explore the possibilities of making faster [hybrid] cars...”- Roberto Fraga
People should pretend that every day is Earth Day and always pick up their own trash. No one likes to go on a pick nick and have the winds slap a gross piece of who knows what into their face. Eww.
Keep the Earth clean, raise awareness about problems, have a great Earth Day and hug a tree!
