While most sports programs at King have been on the decline over the past few years, the baseball team has managed to continue its winning tradition.
The team ended the season with a record of 10-5 in district, and an overall record of 18-9-1. They were tied for second for the ranking in district, and they are ranked 30th in the state.
"I felt good about this season. We could have done better but I think we have had a great season," said sophomore Andrew Rosiere.
Bobby Ledoux has been coaching the Grace King baseball team for 25 years. "Overall, we've had a very successful season. We won 18 games throughout the season--our third most wins ever," said Ledoux.
This year's seniors include Captains Timmy Krennerich, Pierce Liberta, Clinton Guisti, Zac Gerard; and Sal Pinedy. These seniors were honored on April 14, "Senior Night", where the team won their game with a score of 13-3.
"Last year we played like a team, this year we didn't. So I think our main focus this year was to play and win as a team, not to just worry about individual performance," said Rosiere.
The baseball team traveled to Shreveport on May 4 to play their first playoff game against Airline High School, a team ranked third in the state. "They were a very good team, and we played our best," said Ledoux. The game ended in a loss for King, with a score of 11-1. This was King's seventh consecutive year in the playoffs, and their twelfth year in total.
"I know the seniors are disappointed that we didn't win district or the first playoff game, but we have still had a very great season. They are also the fourth class to make playoffs every year of their high school career," said Ledoux.
While this may seem like a lot of people to leave after this year, the team believes they can still do as well, if not better, as this year's team. "We have a very strong baseball tradition where a lot of kids grow up wanting to play Grace King baseball, and that is how our team stays so relevant and competitive."
