The trend of “going green” has spread to Ohio schools. In central Ohio, Granville schools are serving organic foods and offering vegetarian options instead of standard school lunches.
Though there are no current plans to revamp the DeSales cafeteria, we are going green in different ways. The Environmental Club has purchased plastic and aluminum recycling bins for the lunch room, the courtyard and the weight room. “As a group we work at Sheppard’s corner, in the school garden, recycle, and put posters around the school,” said Lauren Colbert, Environmental Club President. Eight years ago the school started recycling paper. “Our club has planted a vegetable garden in the spring and the fruit from our garden has gone to a local food pantry (St. James),” Chemistry teacher and Environmental Club Advisor Ms. Nancy Johnson said.
The club is planning many new events this year. In February, there will be a lunch box week, in December an awareness week and an Earth Day mass in the Spring.
“The success of positive change at DHS environmentally doesn’t rest on the Environmental Club at DHS,” Ms. Johnson said, “but the school community in general. It depends on everyone consciously and intentionally deciding to participate, deciding to care, deciding to do the right thing, and I do think collectively we are getting there. We are definitely a work in progress, and it’s great to see us moving in the right direction.”
