On Tuesday, December 1, President Obama addressed our country with a new war strategy for Afghanistan. Beginning in 2010, 30,000 troops will be sent to Afghanistan to help build their nation’s security. The catch, however, is that the troops will be expected back home by 2011. This strategy was proposed by President Obama in order to please both sides on this argument. Whether or not he pleased anybody appears to be the bigger question at the moment.
Republicans believe that by announcing his new military plans, Obama has enabled the enemy to lay low for a year until the troops are deployed back home. There is also a debate over whether or not one year is enough time to get anything accomplished. Democrats, on the other hand, are still upset over the fact that more troops will be deployed. With the struggling recession our country is still facing, it is indisputable that we cannot afford this action. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi strongly approves of Obama’s new strategy and continuously leans her arguments on the Bush Administration’s past faults, saying, “
President Obama inherited a deteriorating situation in Afghanistan because the Bush administration did not have a plan to get the job done".
This new war strategy is only the first step in fighting national issues. Pending debates with Iran over their nuclear facilities is still lingering, and engaging in conversation with the Iranian President has proved to be a failure in the past. These nuclear facilities pose a great threat against neighboring enemy, Israel, and it is only a matter of time when Israel will take the other option in negotiating with Iran; bombing the nuclear facilities.
For now the New Year will see 30,000 more troops leaving our country. Whether it’s the right decision or the wrong one, giving them our support is America’s responsibility, no matter what.
