The Senior class at Ipswich High School was sweeping every event during Spirit Week 2008. People were wondering whether or not the class would lose one single event the whole week... until the Bat Spin Relay in which the Seniors finished a dismal last place.
However, the Seniors were very confident coming into this event: “I guarantee a win no matter what,” Senior Matt Roberts promised The Tiger Transcript.
Fellow Senior Jimmy Cadogan added, “We’re going to shut out the whole day by winning every event. We’re going to take this!”
The rules of this event require each participant to rest their head on top of a wiffleball bat resting vertically on the ground. Players then spin around in a circle ten times before they are allowed to take off for the race portion of the relay. After spinning around, participants must run twenty yards around a cone and back to the starting line. The steps are repeated with everyone in line, until everyone is done.
When asked about past experiences and predictions for this year's contest, I.H.S. Athletic Director Tom Gallagher, a judge for this event, played it fair: “No comment."
The confidence of the Seniors seemed to spread all over the field. Freshman Louis Galanis said, “We’re the best and are going to take it!” However, not all freshmen had confidence after the event, as Paul Taylor took a huge spill and ended up on the ground in front of the whole school to see.
Junior Scott Furman said he was pretty confident about the event too. He said the three things most necessary to have in order to take the win are: “Confidence, patience…and lots of practice.”
Junior Eli Hayward shared his prepartion regime with The Tiger Transcript: “Lots of protein shakes, three bananas, and of course [praying to], God.”
Luckily for Hayward and the rest of the Junior class, God must have been with them, as they won first place for the event. The official results for the Bat Spin Relay were Juniors, followed by Sophomores, Freshmen, and Seniors.
