One, two, three… every 3.6 seconds someone dies of hunger worldwide (An End for World Hunger). At IHS every year our students do a canned food drive. The student government first started the canned food drive five years ago. During spirit week the canned food drive became competitive; those with the most food would get points. All grades participate in the canned food drive but usually the junior and senior class brings in the most.
“I always bring in food for this drive. I think this is a very important and helpful organization,” senior Colby Smith told “The Tiger Transcript." "I have helped out at the Ipswich food pantry and about one dozen people came in; the cooks made their meals and I and other volunteers helped serve their food. Junior Ben Tzizik told The Tiger Transcript.
All food donated by IHS students go to people in our community who are in need of food and qualify to get food from the pantry. Food pantry qualifications are based on income. Also if you are getting food from the Ipswich food pantry you must be a resident of Ipswich. Some other qualifications include a rent or housing receipt, proof that you are searching for employment, unless disabled, a full time student or retired. “You would be surprised at how many people you actually know that go to the food pantry,” Mr. Cahill told “The Tiger Transcript."
Also, due to the poor economy more and more people are depending on the food pantry in our community. Hundreds of people a year depend on the Ipswich Food pantry and the number of people who get food from the pantry is increasing.
Every year fifteen million children die of hunger, one in twelve people worldwide are malnourished and one out of eight children in the U.S. go to bed hungry every night (An End for World Hunger). These statistics should make everyone want to bring in canned food. The food pantry accepts many foods such as cereal, oatmeal, pasta, crackers, lentils, split peas, salsa, pie fillings, green beans, canned fruits, tuna, olive oil, etc… The food pantry, located on top of the Ipswich town hill inside the church is open every Thursday from five p.m. to seven p.m. The world does produce enough food to support the world’s population so why not help out for those who are in need?
