Dating abuse has been a huge problem in high schools across
the nation. According to ACADV.org, about one in three high school students
have been or will be in an
abusive relationship. Laura Kent came to Ipswich High School
on November 21st to tell the story of her niece Kaitlyn Sudberry, a
senior at Moon Valley
High School in Phoenix, Arizona
who was murdered by her boyfriend on January 28, 2008.
“The
message I want kids to get from my presentation is that teen dating can happen
to anyone” says Kent.
The story of Kaitlyn Sudberry gave a harsh reality to what can result from an
abusive relationship. Kent
also gave some tips for people whose friends may be in an abusive relationship.
“Don’t
withdraw from that person; let that person know they are loved, and talk with
them”. Kent
also discussed some signs of an abusive relationship.
“On the
phone constantly when they are not with you, telling you how to dress, and
wanting to be around you every minute of the day may be some early signs of an
abusive relationship” says Kent.
Kent
also said yelling at you in public, calling you names, saying negatives things
about your appearance could mean you are in an abusive relationship.
