Students and staff were interviewed this week on the topic of school uniforms. Between the students and staff that I asked, twenty five like the uniform idea, and eighty think they shouldn’t have to wear them because students don’t get to express themselves as much. Sixty three people don’t really care if they have to wear uniforms or not.
There were some good and bad comments from some students. Stefanie Sheldon thinks the polo shirts are uncomfortable to wear. Michelle Rife has no problem with wearing the shirts, but she thinks the students should be able to wear whatever kind of pants they want. The cosmetology girls don’t like the uniforms. They think if the students have to wear uniforms the teachers should have to also. As you can tell, the students don’t like the uniform ideas, but there really hasn’t been any problems yet.
The comments from the staff are totally different from the students. Mrs. Hite, Mrs. Kipfersmith, Mrs. Houck, Mr. Bucholz, and Mrs. Verholf all think they should be worn all day, not just in the student’s lab. Mrs. Verholf’s reasoning is that it wastes the student’s school time changing their clothes. Mrs. Lawrence is proud of how the students reacted to the uniform rule. She understands kids don’t want to wear them, but all the students do, and there really hasn’t been any problems, YET. It’s cool to walk in a lab and see everyone wearing the same clothes without complaining. Mr. Nixon thinks they should be worn all day also.
Mr. Mayer, one of the supervisors at FCCC, had some good thoughts about the uniform problem. This is what he had to say. “Overall I think the start of uniforms has been very positive. FCCC has received very good comments from other schools, parents and visitors. I hope we will eventually incorporate wearing them all day”. At the last school he worked at the students had to wear uniforms all day and he said it helped with a bunch of problems like people making fun of someone else because of what they are wearing.
As you see there are mixed thoughts throughout the school about uniforms, but eventually everyone will realize that FCCC students will have to wear them all day.
