Tahoma senior high school has a lenient dress code, Compared to other schools across the nation. When you walk into our school you can see that here, we are aloud to wear many garments that other schools would not even think about letting their students consider to wear.
In Caruthers California, students are not aloud to wear flip-flops, certain wrist bands (associated with certain colors), jeans that are ripped, jeans may not sag, and shirts may not be any longer than finger tips by your own side (boys) and shorts may not be any shorter than your finger tips. The Caruthers school district says “these are a distraction to our schools learning”.
Some other schools that are private have to wear uniforms that are assigned. For the bottom, girls have to wear a shirt or shorts no shorter than mid- thigh, as for the boys they have to wear pants, or shorts no shorter than the knees.
Schools think that by making the uniform rule the students will learn better because they won’t have to think about what other students are wearing. Caruthers once had the uniform rule for only a year, because parents protested. Most parents refused and the school had no other choice but to band the uniform rule. Parents said to the media that they should not have to buy their children separate clothes just for school, also that when they would go to town to buy the schools uniform they were all sold out for as long as it took to get the next order.
Here at Tahoma, we are not very strict about how we dress. On the other hand we are very strict about our hat rule, our hat rule is students do not wear hat inside any building. Not that is distracting any of the students but that it shows respect for the adults. Not that our school will let us run around in ways that do not belong, but we all know what is outrageous to wear. Our school is one of the top schools in the district, and we can see that dress codes have little to do with how much we learn.
