While many students already acquire the knowledge about their opinions to take honors and AP classes, the meeting was mainly held for the upcoming freshman and anyone unsure of their decision about taking challenging courses. To start off the evening, Mrs. Lucas provided a terse explanation of the different opportunities students would obtain by selecting an AP or honors class for the upcoming year. While the majority of the meeting was focused on honors and AP course offerings, Mrs. Ward did give a brief overview on how the IB program incorporates into Dakota Ridge. After the presentation, the Ridge Review had the opportunity to take a few minutes of Mrs. Ward's and Mrs. Neel's time to ask them about the AP and IB programs.

RR: "Does everyone who applies to IB get in?"

Mrs. Ward: "Right now, yes."

RR: "What are your opinions on sophomores being able to enroll in AP classes next year?"

Mrs. Neel: "I think it is good if they're prepared, it's pretty rigorous."

Mrs. Ward: "I think it's a great opportunity if you're up for the challenge. With that, I also believe it should be the student's choice to take the classes, not the parents'."

RR: "Why did DRHS decide to incorporate an IB program into the school?"

Mrs. Ward: "IB is really just another pathway for the students. I mean we already have credit recovery, AE, the learning center, and now we have this. So it's just another thing you can choose to do."

After talking to the English teachers involved with the programs, the Ridge Review also had the chance to talk to a current Honors student, Whitney Rawlings, who was contemplating about taking part in two more honors courses, English 10 and Biology, and an AP class,History, for her sophomore year.

RR: "Are the Honors and AP program something you are looking forward to next year?"

Whitney: "I'm definitely not looking forward to the work, but I think the socialization will be great!"

RR: "What are your expectations for the upcoming year in the classes you've selected?"

Whitney: "I expect to be given lots of homework, so it'll be a step up for me, I'm obviously going to have to work harder than I did this year with only two honors classes, but I'm up for the challenge."

RR: "Do you support DRHS' decision to let sophomores, like your daughter, to take AP classes starting next year?"

Mary Rawlings (mother of Whitney): "Yes, if they're up for the challenge. It's a hard decision to make as a student, and I think it's truly their own decision, the college credit is just a bonus for them."

Don't forget to return your KEEP/DROP sheet into the main office by May 5 to secure your decisions about AP and/or Honors classes for next year!
