Editorial on the Senior Assembly of 2010
Students prepare for the traditional assembly. - Stefan Gonzales

For a long time, the much-loved tradition around the school has been the senior assembly, where the seniors take the floor and retire their spot in the bleachers. For the freshmen, they finally get to feel like they are above some one as they move over to the sophomore’s spot. For the sophomores, they take one step closer to being the “tops dogs” of the school.  And as for the juniors, they take their new thrown at the head of the school.

Even those who have left the school remember their senior assembly.  Ryan Gonzales and James Bricker had to say, “We loved our senior assembly, and of course, since we practically ran the school, so it was hard to let our power go”.

But this year, the senior assembly was interrupted by students who decided to sneak in and throw water balloons at the seniors during their transition. Before these actions took place, rumors spread like wild fire throughout the school of this prank being planned. As a reaction to this, Dr. Jelenik continued to hold the assembly, but took strict precautions by releasing each hall individually so they could be searched at the doors. No back packs were allowed and coat pockets were searched. Still students managed to sneak in the balloons. After the first balloon was thrown, students were escorted out. Due to this prank the seniors were unable to have their full assembly because of the lost time.

The following day, Dr. Jelenik gave his speech in the morning, announcing his feeling on the incident. He was very upset with the entire student population and he formally apologized to the senior students as well as students in Student Government.

It was sad to see such a respected ceremony dishonored, but there is hope that next year will be based more on the traditional assembly and not another repeat of this year.
