After weeks of planning for the 2012 Dakota Ridge Prom, the night finally arrived. On April 14, at 8 o’clock, the doors of the Exdo Event Center opened to welcome the juniors and seniors of Dakota Ridge.

Although many people were concerned about the location of the event center, for the most part, it was safe. Parking is always sparse downtown however, and the parking offered for the Exdo Event Center was the same way. Many people ended up walking a few blocks in the pouring rain that conveniently arrived at the same time.

The theme this year was Under the Sea, and the event center was decorated accordingly. Streamers and sparkling chandeliers hung from the ceiling, and fish were common. The lights occasionally displayed large fish on the wall and created the illusion that they were swimming. Tables were placed on the edge of the dance floor, and couches lined the wall.

For snacks, a chocolate fountain was provided, as well as fruit, pretzels, marshmallows, and anything that could be dipped into chocolate. The drinks were in a boat, keeping with the theme, filled with ice.

The DJ did not seem very popular this year. When “Fireflies” by Owl City began to play, most everyone was disappointed. This was followed by a lot of Kesha, Katy Perry, and Lady Gaga as well as the songs they always play, such as “Like a G6,” by Far East Movement and “Party in the USA” by Miley Cyrus. The first slow song was “Hey There Delilah” by The Plain White T’s.

However, Brittany Holland, a junior, said, “I loved Prom! It was fun and the music was good.”

The Prom royalties were announced around 10 by Mrs. Sullivan and student government. Elijah Davis and Ashley Difulvio were elected Prom Prince and Princess. Michael Glade and Amy Franks were crowned King and Queen and then the royalties joined together to dance to “I’m Yours” by Jason Mraz.

After this, the DJ played “Forget You” by Cee Lo Green, and the stage filled with dancing seniors. Several songs later, a few juniors attempted to get on the stage, however they were kicked off quickly.

“Prom 2012 was a great senior prom, great friends, and a great time. Exdo Event Center was perfectly decorated for our theme,” said Jordan Romero, a senior at Dakota Ridge High School.

The 2012 Dakota Ridge Prom was a great success and will become an unforgettable night for many.
