On May 12th - 13th, Jefferson County’s runners and community members gathered for the Relay for Life. It was a nationwide, all night cancer walk for the American Cancer Society. With a Disney theme this year, runners had the opportunity to run for charity, dressed up as Mickey Mouse and all his good friends.

Starting at 6:30 pm on Friday at Russell Street School, Littleton’s Relay went well this year, with a total of 350 runners and 39 teams. Along with the relay, games and live music were available to team members taking break. Then, closing ceremonies were held the following Saturday morning at 6:00 am.

“Relay supports all types of cancer, but most importantly, it’s for the patients,” says Sammy Merwin (12), the head student for our school in the cancer walk.

Sammy, who raised $597.71 this year herself, went on to explain the benefits given to patients through the charity. “If, through cancer, you may have lost your hair, we can give you a wig or scarf. Or if you wanted your family nearby, we could pay for their hotel. The point is to bridge the gap between the people who can’t afford it and the basic quality of life. Because even if you are sick, you’re still a person.”

Unfortunately, the school was not the most active participant involved in the Relay. Among Dakota Ridge, Chatfield, and Columbine, Dakota has raised the least amount of money at $3,232.02.

The team only had two volunteer runners, so perhaps next year, Dakota Ridge will step up with their support.
