Band directors begin charting the show long before the first performance. They have to consider what is cutting-edge and exciting, and what is actually easy enough to march.

Directors sometimes use moves from previous shows in different arrangements if they run out of ideas, or if the show is too hard to march.

After you learn the moves, you have to be able to play the music. Most bands receive the music months before summer practice begins.

Rehearsing as a group as well as within your section can assist you with learning the music faster and easier. Group rehearsal can improve the overall tone and quality, whereas sectionals can help individuals with difficult passages and notes in the music.

An important reason for the success of so many bands is the leadership within the band. Of course the band directors lead their students, but many students also demonstrate leadership abilities. Drum majors, drill captains, and section leaders help keep the band going when the director is busy or unavailable.

After bands have practiced all summer on music, steps, and routines, it is time for competition. Some bands only go to one a year. Others, like Parkview, go to several during the year.

A few of the bigger competitions Parkview attends are the Region Marching Contest and the Bandmaster’s Competition in Memphis.
