The
Muppets is a charming revamp of the classic Muppet team, starring many
famous Muppets like Kermit, Miss Piggy, Animal, and Fozzie Bear, but also some
lesser known Muppets, like Sgt. Lloyd Pepper and Rowlf. They may not be
familiar, but they might just become your new favorites. Some of the human
stars of the film include Jason Segal and Amy Adams, along with numerous
celebrities with hilarious cameos including Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your
Mother), Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory), Zach Galifianakis (The Hangover),
John Krasinski (The Office), and many more.
The story follows Walter, a young
Muppet with a human twin brother Gary (Segal). He always feels left out, as he
is the only Muppet in Smalltown,
Kansas. But soon he discovers old
videotapes of the 70’s and 80’s TV show “The Muppet Show”. Gary and his
girlfriend, Mary (Adams), are planning to go on a tenth anniversary trip to Los Angeles, the location
of the Muppet Studios where “The Muppet Show” was filmed. Walter comes along
but is sad to find the place run-down and abandoned, and oil magnate Tex
Richman (played by Chris Cooper) is secretly planning to tear down the studio
to drill for oil. Walter is devastated and sets out to find the now retired
cast of “The Muppet Show” so they can put together a telethon to raise money to
prevent Tex
from taking over.
The film features many great
moments, enjoyable for all, young and old. Not much knowledge of the old Muppet
show is needed to enjoy the film, but extra treats are scattered throughout for
those who know their Muppet history. Don’t feel left out if you don’t know much
about the old Muppets, for pop culture references and jokes are also abundant.
The jokes are simple but timeless, and the many celebrity cameos add to the fun.
The musical numbers are charming but unorthodox, so even those who despise
musicals will still enjoy the songs and dances. This film keeps you laughing
non-stop, and can be enjoyed by any age group. I highly recommend you check it
out.
