East Jordan High School students perform the Cha Cha Slide at the 2009 Homecoming Dance. - Sara Robinson
It was 6:20 p.m. on Saturday, October 10th, the day of the East Jordan High School Homecoming Dance. In forty minutes, the doors would open. In forty minutes, three-hundred or so high school students dressed to the nines, despite the dismal weather and potential hypothermia risk, would arrive expecting to dance the night away. In forty minutes, the school had to locate a DJ.
Never to fear! Mr. Tony Cutler and Mr. Mike Wise came to the rescue! When the hired DJ did not show, Mr. Weiss set up the school’s sound system, while Mr. Cutler valiantly stepped in as DJ of the night, playing music from students’ iPods. The students danced to Miley Cyrus, Black Eyed Peas, Journey, and others in a cafeteria adorned with balloons, streamers, and Christmas lights. To an outsider looking in, one would never know that things had gone awry at the beginning.
Louse Sahlman, a high school senior, enjoyed the dance. She commented, “I thought it was a lot of fun. The music was okay, even though the DJ never showed!” It was a night to remember for all those involved!
