On Oct. 16, 2006, former WJ teacher Richard Baxter died at his home after a long battle with cancer. He was 60.

Born in 1946 in New York City, Baxter joined the Army and was stationed in Germany for several years during the 1960s. He worked a variety of jobs after returning from the Army and eventually entered the City University of New York and became a teacher in New York City in 1981.

In 1986, he and his family moved to Montgomery County, where Baxter taught at Damascus High School. After transferring to Richard Montgomery High School, he taught IB History in the IB program. He served as an administrator for one year, but quickly returned to teaching in 1998 when he arrived at WJ to teach AP US History in the APEX program. During his tenure at WJ, he also taught Ancient and Medieval History and Modern World History as well as serving as advisor for The Pitch for one year. Baxter also organized the annual spring break Europe trip for 11 straight years.

Baxter earned Masters degrees from both the City University of New York and Towson State University.

Baxter is survived by his wife of 32 years, Rosa; his son, Richard; and his daughter, Elena.

In lieu of flowers, a scholarship fund in Baxter’s name will be established at WJ.

At this time, checks can be made payable to Walter Johnson High School. A memorial service will be held at WJ on Nov. 22.
