Granted, the burning question in most people’s minds, and what often discourages other women from joining the team, is whether or not wrestling against sweaty, scantily-clad men would be awkward.

“Well, of course it is uncomfortable, especially when almost the whole team is laughing under their breath because the coach is telling me to lift my hands up my partners butt cheeks,” said Tobar. “Though when everyone is too busy practicing and I’m in an intense match I don’t even think about how uncomfortable I am or in what position I’m in. I just do whatever I can to win.”

Few high school sports have both men and women competing against each other. Wrestling is an exception. “It’s quite different because unlike a lot of the other WJ sports that we have, it’s co-ed and not more or less like a boys team or a girls team. It’s more intermixed,” said Weiss.

But what about the men? How do they feel about wrestling women?

“They are our teammates so we wrestle with them and push them in practice just as we would any male wrestler,” said senior and varsity wrestler Ben Yezer. “The only difference is we don’t change in the same locker room, but when we hit the mats, we are all wrestlers. Gender doesn’t matter.”
