Belly shirts in 20-degree weather bring new meaning to the cliché "fashion over comfort." / Photo by Laura Littman -

Walking towards the sophomore and freshman hallway during lunch, the air begins to thicken with the aroma of spaghetti straps and barely-there underwear length skirts. Not to mention muffin top exposing shirts (think of a muffin, now think of a girl who shouldn’t be wearing tight pants and a belly shirt. Get it?).I think to myself: am I entering the red light district or the underclassmen hallway?
“I look at the freshman and the way they dress, act, and talk to each other and it’s like, where do you want to be in the next four years?” said senior Cristina Vessels. “You just have to wait for the good things.”
Why do children want to grow up? Peter Pan wanted to stay a child as long as he could enjoying the simple pleasures of imagination and lack of responsibility. However, far from Neverland, in today's world, 14-year-old girls want be 18 and 18 year-olds want to be 21.
As you grow older, you develop a sense of maturity and understanding that lets you to take responsibility for your actions, recognize the consequences, and know when to quit. When inexperienced children and teenagers attempt things they aren't ready for, no good can come from it.
We recently experienced this when we found out about two WJ freshmen girls being admitted to the hospital for alcohol poisoning. It’s a terrible tragedy, but maybe it’s what we needed to wake us up. The younger grades are attempting things they can’t handle and aren’t yet ready for. There’s a limit to everything and when you try and do things for the first time around with already experienced students, there is a high sense of pressure and stress to keep up.
Come to think about it, teen drinking is wrong for anyone to do no matter what the grade. It’s stupid and makes some of us do things we’ll definitely regret however, if you are going to do it at least wait until you are mature enough to handle the responsibility and know when to stop.
Although the underclassmen have a problem with acting their age they also choose to completely disregard the issue of respect.
Senior Sam Nellis said, “I find there is a large amount of disrespect that they [underclassmen] show towards older students. I was completely frightened of other people, even the ones I knew simply because I knew my place and my place was not at their level.”
The underclassmen have a pompous and pretentious attitude that is just unnecessary. You earn the right to brag or boost and be on top after enduring three and four years in high school, not your pitiful one or two. Getting on top takes time and patience. Just wait. You’ll get there.
You're missing out on the best years of your lives. Now is your last chance to be a kid because once you hit the real world there’s no way you can go back. Save the drinking, the partying, and the risky behavior for later in life when it’s actually, I don’t know, legal. High school is the time to hang out with your friends, go the movies, and take silly pictures of yourselves while being out at dinner with a group of your friends. Be obnoxious, loud, have fun because your excuse is, 'Kids will be kids.'
