Sometimes it is just not possible to get into the classes that we need as students. For those few students that really cannot fit an important class in, there is independent study.
Not everyone can get into independent study just because they want to. The guidance counselors will first try their hardest to first place the student into a class, whether that be in a class room or enrolling him or her in an online class. A student will only be placed in an independent study class if there is no other option and if there is a teacher willing to advise them.
This year two seniors became part of the few students that had to use the option of independent study. When asked on his thoughts on the class Zach Lomison said, “It’s a lot quieter and it’s really one-on-one with the teacher; you end up getting more work done.” He continued with his reason on why he couldn’t take part in the regular class, “I took AP English as independent study because I also am in the Lyco CTC program at Hughesville and my bus leaves at noon meaning I’d miss almost all of the third block class.” The other senior, Robin van Dyke said she could not fit the regular scheduled course into her day because AP English just did not fit in her schedule with all her other AP classes.
The teacher who is guiding them through the task of learning an AP English class on their own is Mrs. Kelly June who said she has taught an independent study on two separate occasions and “It was always a positive experience because students were more motivated and it was a good fit.”
