On February 24, 2011, the singers of the North Harford chorus took the stage to perform Rewind.
The concert consisted of 7 different singing groups, and opened with The Madrigals rendition of Kansas’s “Carry on My Wayward Son.” When things started to heat up, not only was the piano being played, but senior Tim Meehan entertained the audience with some electric guitar to electrify the performances. Meehan said that he has “performed in front of students before, so that wasn’t a big deal,” and that “aside from being sick that night, it was a fantastic experience.”
Audience members were transported back in time to the hits from before the 2000’s. Songs like “I Want It That Way,” “All-Star,” and “We Are the World” seemed to give the members of the chorus a sense of energy and excitement, but they also got almost every member of the audience involved. Senior John Roman sang the popular 80’s song “What is Love” almost exclusively by himself. “I would like to thank Kyle Orlando for writing me into the show,” Roman said. “This was my first solo performance in front of a large audience. I feel like it was my first break as a singer, I enjoyed it very much, and would love to continue my career as a musician.”
Yet the guy who seemed to steal the show, for the audience at least, was Josh Shimming. His solo during “Barbara Ann” made the crowd go crazy, and he was perhaps the highlight of the night.
The audience seemed to enjoy all of the performances as well, and the last act of the show resulted in a standing ovation. One thing that made this a special concert for the community was that the chorus decided to donate some of the money earned to a local charity. So local, in fact, that it has an impact on this very school. Two hundred and fifty dollars went towards the adopted animals in the magnet program at North Harford High School.
Chorus teacher and director Mrs. Angie Jones had nothing but positive things to say about her students.
“I think it was a fabulous concert for many reasons. First off, the Rewind theme was chosen by the students so I think they bought into it more than they usually would. The students also choreographed the dances themselves, which allowed people that may not usually be leaders to step up.” Jones went on to say that this is a “very diverse choir” and that not only the singers did great, but that the members of the band did an outstanding job as well.
