Mrs. Richards making sure Cheyenne's shorts are acceptable. - Cara Hewitt
This year one of the big controversies is the school dress code. Since the first day of school students have had to change their clothing because their choices did not work with the school guidelines. Most students do not see the issue with their clothing, on the other hand the school board does.
A few students were asked what they thought of the school dress code. On a negative note some students have said, “As long as our rear or chest is not showing I don’t see the problem.” On the other hand some students agree that there should be these types of guidelines.
Mrs. Price also made a comment about the issue: “Last school year, when I talked to students who were in violation of the dress code, I kept hearing the same responses from students such as: This teacher said if my shirt strap is two fingers wide, I’m okay. This teacher said if my shirt strap was three fingers wide, I’m okay.
I believed that students were getting misinformation from adults therefore; it made it very difficult to discipline students when they believed they were following the rules. This year, I wanted to start the year off by explaining the dress code to students and teachers alike so that the information given to students would be the same. The rules are the same as last year.”
At other schools there are a few less “harsh” rules such as, instead of one’s shorts and skirts having to be fingertip length, if one would extend the hands down to the sides and make a fist then shorts and skirts only have to go to the fist. Another is that if tank tops straps are at least two finger lengths wide then they are acceptable.
This has been a big issue, but it is also one that students will have to abide by. When choosing one’s clothing be careful, and check to make sure the dress code is being followed.
