At-a-glance

Have you ever been in class texting or checking your email, Facebook, MySpace, etc. and wondered why it is so important that everyone answer their texts right away?  How many other people do it, or if there are people that do it even more than you?  Have you ever been walking in the hall and notice a kid texting and walking without really looking in front of them, bumping into people, and all over the place?  For some reason people seem to need to always be informed on others and gossip.  It seems teenagers always need to be “in the loop.”
To find out just how much people need to be informed we went out into the hallways and tried to find some random students to answer some questions, we also asked a few teachers that we suspected may have a good input on the subject.
The questions were as follows:
“Do you text outside of school?”
“Do you text during school?”
“Do you use any sort of networking websites such as Facebook, MySpace, IM, etc. outside of school?” and “Do you use them during school?”
Then we asked them “Do you check your websites often?” and to end it we asked “Would you say you are a person who needs to be informed about other people frequently?” The following people were interviewed: Abby G, Casey O, Chelsea B, Santana H, Ryan H, Haley V, Mr. Brian Skaggs, Mr. Phil Hoover, Mr. Wade Heckle, and Mrs. Lisa Engers.
Out of those interviewed, except for one student without a cell phone and one teacher, every teacher and student texts outside of school.  Every student interviewed who owns a cell phone, and even one teacher, who will remain unnamed, text during school hours.  Abby even answered a text while we were conducting the interview!  Only one student interviewed admitted to using personal websites in school.  Outside of school all but Mr. Heckle and Mr. Skaggs use internet networking.  Of those interviewed that use personal website, they all check their sites every day or every other day.  And the ending question of “Would you say you must always be informed?” only four students interviewed said they are and no teachers said that felt that way.
So the results say that the majority of students use texting and personal websites frequently, and most of those that do use these often would say that they are the kind of person that must constantly be informed about other people and the latest gossip.
