Recently in Zeeland East and Zeeland West High Schools there has been controversy over the price difference of the two school’s prom tickets. Zeeland East has significantly lower priced tickets than Zeeland West. Zeeland East prom tickets are $38 a piece, while West’s are $55 each. East Jr. Senate member Hannah Acosta informed us that the reason behind this is fundraising. Both schools sell t-shirts and candy, but unlike West, East has done more fundraising like Vitale’s Pizza fundraising nights and parent donations with a lot of success.

West Jr. Senate member Brooke Petzak says the reason for East’s fundraising success is because “East has more students than West so they have more people to sell to, that’s why our tickets are more expensive.” However, Petzak doesn’t think that the prices of West’s prom tickets will affect attendance because the prices are the same as last year.

Acosta hopes that because of East’s lower prices more people than last year will be able to attend prom. Acosta believes that prom is “A fun experience where seniors can enjoy their last hurrah, and it’s a great thing that juniors are able to plan for the seniors.” East juniors have put in a lot of effort to make this year’s prom a great one for seniors.

Zeeland East is a good example of how fundraising really can lower costs and make prom more enjoyable.  Hopefully in years to come both school senates will take this into consideration and polish their fundraising strategies.

Zeeland West’s prom is on April 16 and will be held at the Trillium in Spring Lake. And Zeeland East’s prom is on April 23 and will be held at Lake Town Golf and Conference Center.
