With the 2010 high school football season coming to an end, many seniors will be taking their talents to the collegiate level of play.

One player on the Notre Dame Academy football team has a shot to go farther than others.

Standout captain Peter Mortell has played an assortment of positions throughout his career, from wide receiver to quarterback to defensive back.  Such a variety would be challenging for anyone.

"It's definitely challenging, but when you look up at the scoreboard at the end of the game and your team has more points than the other, it's worth the beating that the body takes," said Mortell.

He plays whatever position the coaches want him to play, whatever it takes to give the team the best chance of winning.

"I would play lineman if the team needed me to," Mortell said, "but that's no surprise because everyone that's on the team would like to do anything possible to get a win."

Even though he plays all over the field, the one position where he is getting national attention is being a punter.

Mortell is currently ranked in the Top 15 in the nation for punting and acknowledges that it is an honor to be in such an elite group of players.

"It's nice to know that all of the hard work I put in over the winter and spring has paid off, and it feels good to be considered or noticed at a national level," he said.

The hard work he is talking about is going to punting camps.  "I've been to seven or eight camps, mostly in Wisconsin, but I've gone to one in Illinois and one at Disney World in Orlando," Mortell said.

The camps are put on by Kohl's Professional Camps for kicking, punting and long snapping.

The process of these camps is that Kohl's holds national showcases all over the country.  Each punter is videotaped and all of his punts are recorded by length and hang time. Rankings are determined by who has the best combination of the two.  Higher distance with a higher hang time equals a higher ranking.

The camps are done to showcase players’ talents for colleges all over the nation, including Top 25 football schools.

Most recently, the NDA senior finished 6th out of 140 at the national scholarship camp this past summer in Whitewater, Wisconsin.   Only the top punters, kickers and long snappers were there from all around the nation, as an invitation was required to participate in the camp.

One might think his role is easy, just punting the ball all the time.  Well, it's not. It's hard when the weather conditions are bad, when the wind is blowing 50 mph into your face, when the team against you is trying to block it, when the long snapper doesn't get the ball back to you fast enough and you have to rush all of your steps.  Imagine you have those conditions, and yet you still are expected to pin the ball inside the opponent's 10-yard line.  It's a tough job.

"My job is a lot easier having Joe Rotherham as my long snapper.  He is tremendous and is currently ranked eighth in the nation for long snapping."

With football on the back burner, Mortell has visited the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Marquette University.  He really liked them both.

A number of schools are interested in Mortell  for his punting skills, but he is more focused on graduating from Notre Dame Academy first.
