Healthier Food Choices a Welcome Addition to Vegetarians and Meat-Eaters Alike

Konop Vending, the Notre Dame catering service, decided to take a healthier approach to this year’s menu. In adding more healthful choices, they also raised the price of the food.

Konop, who serves 1,100 lunches everyday in the Green Bay area, has a “right choice” program that allows them to create a customized menu for a certain area, in which they did for Notre Dame.

New selections this year from the right choice program include turkey burgers, sweet potato fries, cereal, enchiladas, and granola bars.  While the healthier choices are a welcome addition, a question remains: does the quality outweigh the cost?

“The food may be a little pricey, but I don’t really care, because the food is good,” said sophomore Hannah Daavatila.

Sophomore Andrea Mariani said, “It’s a little expensive. The food is okay, but it’s not worth the price.”

Besides the price of a Konop lunch, the other subject which has student talking is the pizza, which some say has a “rubbery” texture and costs too much for the quality of the pizza.

Other Notre Dame students could care less about the price, and only focus on the quality of the food.

In my opinion, for the few times I bought school food, Konop’s salad bar was satisfactory, but their fruit cost $2 for one cup. I am a vegetarian, and I was satisfied with the vegetarian options, but not satisfied with the high prices.

For vegetarians, there is a salad bar, muffins, fruit, mashed potatoes and more, and for people looking to eat a healthier diet, there are many options for that too, including a low fat turkey burger replacing the cheeseburgers of last year. The vegetarian options pleased me because I previously had a hard time finding things to eat.

Konop also kept some of the same menu items from last year including fries, pudding, and cookies.

A sub sandwich bar would be a good thing to add, and many other NDA students agreed.

Konop’s new food choices are a great improvement towards Notre Dame’s health and well-being and the quality of their food is far more important than the prices in question.
