This is the next generation of superhero characters, one dedicated to encouraging kids and adults alike to “do the right thing” by connecting with them through a unique medium: music.
Founded by Westchester High School, Class of 1994 alumnus Davien Watkins, Superhero Enterprises is a company dedicated to aiding in the fight against Internet music piracy and other crimes against the music industry by creating society’s next generation of heroes that embody their mission. The idea is the product of Watkins’s love of music and a lot of creativity.
In the past, Watkins worked in the record industry with many musicians such as Ice Cube and Jay Z, but his desire to ultimately pursue his own music drove him to begin his own company.
Many people referred to him as “Super Dave,” a nickname that was both endearing and catalytic—the superhero theme was something that was highly popular among people of all types and proved to be a great marketing strategy.
With help from the production staff as well as some comic book legends such as Kevin Eastman, creator of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the cover character of Superhero Enterprises was born: N.O.T.E.S., the crime fighting and peace preserving “studio superhero.”
N.O.T.E.S as well as the other Superhero Enterprises characters live in a world that is plagued by the constant problem of copyright infringement and piracy. N.O.T.E.S.’s persona as a highly skilled music technician emphasizes the negative effects of piracy as, through his words, followers of the comic get a better understanding of how disrespected artists feel when their music is abused or stolen.
One such music thief is Duplicate, N.O.T.E.S.’s evil arch nemesis. The series centers on N.O.T.E.S. and his struggles against his enemies, but at the end of the day, his triumphs just serve to reinforce the timeless notion that good always conquers evil, whether it be in the studio or out of it.
But N.O.T.E.S’s mission extends much further than just persuading people to stop pirating music. He is the embodiment of a strong moral character and, through his righteous actions, fights to protect the sanctity of not just the music industry, but society as a whole.
Even though most of the appeal lies with the comic book characters, according to Watkins, the ultimate mission of his company is “to create good music with a positive vibe and a message.”
The company succeeds gracefully in this goal as its music boasts the fresh and popular rhythms and beats of today’s music scene, but does so without vulgarity or obscenity. Some of Watkins’ music can be found at the Superhero Enterprises Soundcloud page: http://soundcloud.com/superheroenterprises-com.
Superhero Enterprises may be just one of many budding comic book companies across the globe, but its unique angle, mixing comics, and music certainly makes it the most dynamic and innovative.
All Westchester students are entreated to further explore the amazing work of Davien Watkins as he is a living example of how a vision and some hard work can help Comets do great things.
