Michael Myers made a second appearance in two years for Rob Zombie’s Halloween II premiere this August. Zombie had previously directed a remake of the original 1978 film, and again returned to finish his vision. Seeing fairly good success ($16 million opening weekend), many would think that this movie was just as good as Zombie’s previous movie. That, however, is not the case.
Zombie went with the B-Movie formula of more blood equals better movie. However, the increased violence actually detracted from the movies actual plot, and succeeded in making it less scary. At one point, the friend of the protagonist was killed in a gruesome way filled with too much fake blood. When the main character found her, the resulting scene was supposed to be an emotional moment but ended up being a dark humor type of scene. The new Myers would literally kill almost anybody who showed up on screen, and anyone who had any screen time was certain to meet their untimely demise. This took the surprise out of the killings, and at times the brutality in which he dispatched his victims was almost comical.
So if you’re a die hard Michael Myers fan, this movie is still for you. However if you’re a newcomer to the series, this movie will most certainly ruin the previous remake and definitely ruin the entire series in itself.
