Over the past three weeks, spring sports have been preparing for their upcoming seasons. One in particular is girl’s lacrosse. They had their first week of practice before the March break. After two weeks off, they returned to school ready to train. Their true start of the season began March 30th. The team quickly bonded and came together for their first game on April 7th verses Providence Country Day (PCD).  During the first half of the game, PCD came out strong and scored several goals. Rocky hill had a slow start but by the beginning of the second half, they began fighting back. They came back to score enough goals to tie it up. Though they made a remarkable comeback but it was not enough PCD won the game 11 to 5. Shreve Cameron, one of the three captains of the team, had this to say about their first game “The beginning of the game was rocky, but we collected ourselves during half time and we played smoothly during the second half”. Since then the girls have had two more games. Their second game they lost 7 to 12, but then during their third game the team turned it around and played a great against Falmouth. They lost 10 to 14 but it was a close game.

Although the team is still adjusting to their new teammates who have a range of different skill levels, they seem hopeful about how things will turn out in the upcoming season in the interview with Shreve Cameron, senior, she also said, “We have a lot of new players but they are quick learners and we are working hard to stay in shape. Staying in shape is probably one of the most important aspects of lacrosse, besides skill & learning how to play. Everyone works hard every day during practice and I see a lot of promise with the team we have now. Although, we have lost valuable players throughout the years our team is constantly building and we are always working hard”. Another co-captain and senior, Anthea Wiexel, had this to add, “During the second half we played like we should have the whole game”.

Recently, the team had a minor setback when they learned they would have to adjust to a new coach, but Coach Gretchen Scharfe, also the school’s dean of student life, has made the transition easy for every player. Coach Scharfe is already known around the school for her fun and relaxing office that is always open to anyone. Scharfe had this to say about her new position as coach, “The most challenging piece is meshing my style with what the girls already know. They have had a lot of success and I don’t want to make too many changes but I hope to bring their game to another level by teaching new strategies and adding additional skills to their repertoire”.

The team is excited about the season ahead of them co-captain Shreve even had this to say, “Our team has a lot of promise and I am really excited for this season”. Her co-captain Anthea had this to add, “Once we play together more, everything will run more smoothly. I know we are capable of beating a lot of the teams we're going to face”.
