At-a-glance

Theater Arts II students recently studied the concept of reality shows for television. They studied the advantages and disadvantages of reality shows and made comments on reality shows that they currently follow. They also had the opportunity to create their own idea for a reality show.

I think the parents need to have a lock on this show. Personally I think this show is very entertaining. However for children under a certain age, this show could impact their bad and good decisions.

"My Reality Show" by James Durham
I have an idea for a reality TV show. This show would vaguely resemble survivor, but with a Bear Grylls twist. It would also be based almost exclusively in arctic environments. The main theme of this show would be survival, however, not popularity. There would be no voting, no tribes, no contacts, just twelve people trying to outlast each other. This show would focus on regular people fighting the elements and each other for resources. The men and women would be lightly supplied at the beginning and would have an emergency flare to pop it they give up. The supplies for each contestant would be a KBAR knife, two power bars, a knife sharpener, and four matches. Contestants will have backgrounds in the military, as backpackers, and as extreme hunters. In total, this contest will be a battle of wills. Fighting to survive, each contestant must outlast the competition or join together. In the end, there is only one objective. Survive.

Today, reality TV shows have become trashy, low-brow, and just plain vulgar. If you're looking for a good reality TV show that is also clean, then look no further. Okay, here's the pitch: 12 people live in a bus traveling cross-country together, if they can make it from New York to San Francisco, they receive the grand prize of $10,000. But the catch is this, the bus is full of snakes. This idea is clean, fun, and anything but practical. If this pitch were turned into a reality show, it would certainly increase ratings for that channel and guarantee an enjoyable viewing experience. The contestants would be ordinary, everyday people . Not special actors, famous people, or anywhere else where they would be recognized. The snakes would be non-venomous. They are merely there to provide the fear factor of the situation, not to cause any actual harm. This way the safety of the snakes and contestants are ensured. The combination of fear along with the tense, social setting will wear at the contestants nerves. Eventually, they will one by one have to escape the bus until finally the winner is crowned.

"Reality TV As A Whole" by Raiel Byrne.
I follow Little People Big World. In that reality show, they show two little people with three normal size kids and one small kid. It shows the struggles they go through to make everyday life easy for them. The reason for reality TV shows is because of its low cost to produce and the audience gets really into the show. The producers get to know the cast greatly. In Little People Big World, the kids have grown up around the producer and the audience knows and respects the Roloffs. The show pays for the children to go to college and other activities They are popular with audiences because they are novel and unpredictable. The down side of these types of programs is that they will probably never make money in syndication. Many reality shows lack aesthetic value. So really how you feel about it, reality TV as a new low in television.
