“People underestimate the sport until they step on the ice,” says Jon Downing, a Viewmont Hockey captain. Although hockey is not a school sanctioned sport it continues to grow in popularity throughout Viewmont High School. “Anyone can catch and throw a ball. But it takes a different kind of skill to skate while handling a puck,” said Downing. Even if you don’t understand hockey, you can recognize the talent our hockey team possesses. The hockey team is one of the few to go undefeated thus far.
Viewmont won 3-2 in a close game against Murray last night, and has gone undefeated this season. Scorers last night were Bronson Kunzler with one goal, and PJ Tanner with two.
“Last night’s game was intense!” says Haley Bowen, a spectator. “We had 30 seconds to hold them, and were able to pull through, thanks to good D in Jon Downing and Ben Leishman.” Also to be recognized is Viewmont’s excellent goalie, Isaac Richardson.
Hockey plays again tonight at the Davis Recreational Center at 9:15 against Judge, another undefeated team. “Tonight’s a whole other story, Judge will be a tough team to beat,” commented Downing. “This year we haven’t been challenged up until these last few games, and once we make it to the playoffs it will be a whole different game skills wise.”
An important factor to these games is the fans that come out to support. “I Love the fans!” says Jon Downing, who also passes on the hockey team’s hopes that anyone who can, will show up tonight and cheer the Vikings on to victory. Another request is that the fans will not use vulgarity towards the other team, especially their goalie as it prevents potential fans from enjoying the experience.
Everyone is invited to attend the game tonight. We need all the fan support we can get! Good luck, Viewmont Hockey!
