On the 1st of October our Lady Griffins
volleyball team had a tournament at Estero Recreational Sport Center. Their first game was at ten in the morning
against Cape Coral. Haley Edwards,
Lauren Gottsch (the teams most successful hitter that day), Kelsey Anders and
team captains, Leah Poore and Braeleen Scott were the first to take the court.
The game
was intense. Coach Rob received two
yellow cards before the end of the second set for arguing with the officials
over bad calls. The Griffin’s opponent,
Cape Coral High School, showed great sportsmanship when they agreed that bad
calls had been made and even tried to give the points back to Gateway. Our
ladies lost the first set 23 to 25 and their second set 20 to 25.
The
ladies then played Lemon Bay. Tensions ran
high when the team realized the same referees were to be with them for that
game. The team allowed this frustration
to get the better of them, and the result was a loss to Lemon Bay.
The Lady
Griffin’s got it together for their game against East Lee High School taking
both sets with scores of 25-18 and 25-20.
The streak two game winning streak was not to last – Mariner High School
pummeled our Ladies in the first game with a score of 25-7; the Ladies battled
back in the second game, and ending up winning. In a thrilling tie-breaker the
Lady Griffins persevered and put Mariner to rest.
All in
all, an exciting day on the court for our Griffin athletes!
