As a current soprano in the Shores choir, music is part of my schedule every day. Not only is music a class for me, it’s a necessity.

My favorite song blares as an alarm in the morning because my dad has figured out it is the only way to wake me up. I have to play music at night for me to settle down and go to bed. For me, music flows throughout my day as a way to keep me on track.

Many variations of sound make music an extremely widespread enjoyment not only in the United States but around the world.

But sticking in the small town of Muskegon, music is everywhere.

Our ears hear music while we stand in an elevator, while we eat our burgers at Chili’s, and while we walk through the mall. Even while I’m typing, the soundtrack of Footloose is playing through iTunes.

Many types of music come along with the generations. Dubstep has become a recent favorite to many students at Shores; however, some do not consider it music.

A mixture of bass, drum patterns, clipped samples, and occasional vocals make up the music of Dubstep. Some say it is just noise, and it is not categorized under the common definition of music.

Music is an art form that is used to express emotion, and some believe that Dubstep has no emotional value and is just a repetition of sound.

Even if people do not favor Dubstep, other music genres are most likely on their radar.

Music surrounds everything we do. Whether it is the one minute bell playing a radio station, a neighbor playing his bass too loud, or choreography completed by music, music accompanies almost everything we do.

From commercials to the sound stage to one’s favorite store and the speakers in the car to the iPod in one’s hand, music is part of everyday life.

How could one not like music?
