Forget about the sappy girl movies you are used to watching. “Bridesmaids” is an entirely different kind of chick flick. This is an outrageously funny, female rivalry movie, with a lot of profanity but it still reminds you about the importance of true friendship.
Annie (Kristen Wiig) is a baker who lost her store during the recession and now has a job at a jewelry store where she spoils everyone’s happy relationships by blabbering about her own personal problems.
She is in love with a man who sees her only as a friend with benefits (Jon Hamm) and lives in a place where her roommates are strange and do not respect her personal life.
Lil (Maya Rudolph), Annie’s best friend, is the only person she really can be herself around and confide in. When Lil gets engaged, she asks Annie to be her maid of honor.
When Annie tries to give her best friend the best wedding ever, she fails, thanks to Lil’s new friend Helen (Rose Byrne) unexpectedly throwing Annie out of her maid of honor position. Throughout the movie, Helen and Annie compete against to give Lil the wedding of her life. Unfortunately, Annie does not have the budget that Helen has and therefore Helen impresses everybody with her expensive gifts.
Wiig, who stars in “Saturday Night Live,” definitely outdid herself, showing what an amazing comedy writer and performer she can be. This movie perfectly suited her.
The rest of the bridesmaids are funny because they each have their own unique personalities. Megan (Melissa McCarthy), the sister of the groom, is an overweight girl who causes much of the laughter throughout the movie.
The movie has lines that stand out such as when Lil asks Annie, “Why can’t you pretend to be happy for me and talk bad behind my back like a regular person would?”
“Bridesmaids,” from the directors who created “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” and “Knocked Up,” is a hilarious movie about friendship and relationships. It’s the perfect comedy to see on a date night or with a group of girlfriends.
