Flipping Owt the HOPS- CARES Talent show on March 4, 2011 was FL!P’D OWT crew.
Hendrick Ramos said, “We are a Hip-Hop dance crew with all different styles.”
Before coming to Midwood, FL!P’D OWT crew was already pretty famous around here. People who know the crew would talk and show videos of them dancing.
Darwin Romulus ’12 said, “I was very surprised when I saw FL!P’D OWT crew performing, I knew that they could dance because I saw a video that Michely Zhong ’12 had, but I didn’t know that they could breakdance like that. It was awesome.”
From the applause and the cheering during their performance, I think students and grownups liked it.
Aaron Lak ’12 said, “I was out of my seat, screaming and putting my hands up. Their performance was well put out and choreographed. It was solid and clean. You can tell they put a lot of practice into it. There were little mess ups here and there, but didn’t really affect the overall performance.”
Nancy Wu’12 said, “I was amazed. To be honest, I didn’t expect much, considering that they were around our age. However, I found myself unable to take my eyes off of them.”
Rudolph Ramos, a brother of Hendrick Ramos, said “They have been growing in talent, since their first performance. I think this is their strongest performance yet!”
People stood up when the two youngest members, Jericho Malabuuyoc and Kevin Langaman, had their own solos.
Estefani Montiel ’12 said, “Their performance was mind blowing. However, I favored the little boy (Jericho) with glasses’ solo the most!”
Wu ’12 said, “He ( Kevin) is a Beast on FIYAH! He has the potential to be famous and he is so cute.”
Everyone in FL!P’D OWT besides Hendrick Ramos, who is the dictator of the group, is somehow related to each other. Other members are Jeniel Muere , Joshua Muere, Jeric Arenas, Matthew Langaman and Michael Langaman. Erin Mercado is the only girl in the group. Jerico Malabuuyoc and Kevin Langaman are the two youngest ones in the group.
The age of the members are varied from 10 to 17 years old. They come from different schools. The youngest is in elementary school and the oldest is in high school.
Ms. Marcia Kaufman, organizer of the show, said, “As long as one student is in this school, they can perform as a group with other people that are not from the school.” However, in this situation, none of the members of the FL!P’D OWT crew are attending Midwood High School as of now.
The crew formed 2 years ago in early January 2009, and they have been representing Filipinos ever since then. Before performing at Midwood, they performed at Baruch College, San Pabulo, festivals, family gatherings and Evolution 5.
Matthew Langaman said, “Personally, I just like dancing with the crew. We hope to inspire people while doing what we do.”
During practices, the members fool around a lot. However, after fooling around, they get serious and practice for about 7 hours. They practice mostly during the weekend and if they don’t practice with the crew, they practice by themselves.
Joshua Muere said, “Sometimes during practices, we get distracted by video games like Super Smash Bros. Brawl. After Hendrick gets angry and throws chairs, we start practicing seriously again.”
Like everyone in the world, inspiration and looking up to their idols encouraged and motivated them. The Jabbawockeez, Poreotics, Kaba Modern, and many others inspired this particular crew.
Jeniel Muere said, “We started as a crew, copying Jabbawockkez’s choreography. Soon after, we each found our own styles which include popping, hip hop and breakdancing and started to make our own choreography.”
They each have their own reason for dancing.
Erin Mercado said, “I use dancing as a way to express myself because I can’t express myself in any other way.”
FL!P’D OWT crew was invited to the HOPS-CARE Talent show. They hope to be invited next year also.
