While many seniors are worrying about their prom outfits, dates, and a zillion other details, for graduation day, there are still some who are willing to take time off to answer a few valuable questions on their college application process as well as share their fond memories of Midwood.
Mercy Palomeque “11, who is going to Buffalo University craves independence.
Palomerque said, “I chose buffalo university because it had the program I wanted. It also meant I could be seven hours away from home.” She added, “I chose to study upstate New York because I want to be more independent. I want to experience the real world.”
In terms of the college application process, she advises juniors to first of all study hard for the SATs as it really counts, as well as try to have some extracurricular activities.
“No matter what other people say about how you can’t get into a college, just apply. You will never know if you don’t try,” she said.
Mercy feels really sad about leaving Midwood because she is going to miss a lot of her friends. However, she will always cherish her teachers and friends.
“I love the fact that teachers look out for you. Midwood gave me the chance to interact with several people, and I found my best friends in Midwood, “she said.
Keira Luana Graham “11, chooses Hunter College for financial reasons.
She said, “Even though I received a pretty good amount of grants and scholarships from private universities, it still wasn’t enough to cover what my mother could handle.”
She advises all juniors to start early. July early.
“The applications get tedious, and the essays need to be done as soon and as well as possible,” she said.
Keira feels bitter sweet to leave Midwood because of many of the teachers, students, and opportunities that she had for the past four years as well as fond memories of the Boy’s basketball championship game; however, she still thinks life has to move on.
“I think we now have what we need to move on to college life successfully,” she said.Hunter College for financial reasons. Alyse Hunt “11 chose Grinnell College because it was the best school she got into and was lucky that they gave her the most money as well.
She said, “The college application process is stressful and I suggest getting most of your essays done before senior year being it was very helpful.”
“Make the college office your best friend, they are very helpful, don’t be afraid to ask questions or for help with an application,” she added.
Alyse said senior year was fun, and she will always remember seeing SING for the first time at Midwood; however, she is “definitely ready for something new.”
Like many seniors, Natalie Zolotareva ‘11 chooses Binghamton University because of financial reasons.
She said, “It was the most affordable option besides Macaulay Honors Hunter.”
“However I always knew I wanted to go away from the city and live independently,” she added.
Leaving Midwood is not going to be easy for Natalie.
“Because in college you have to start from the beginning, create your own safety net of peer advisors and friends. However it’s definitely the next step in life to self exploration, personal and intellectual development as well as in understanding my role in life,” she said.
For juniors Natalie has a lot to say.
“Take the SATS seriously do your homework about colleges and programs they have to offer and not apply to a gazillion schools carelessly on a whim like I did you’ll save a lot of time and money doing it.”
Finally her most memorable event in Midwood would have to be senior trip.
“Meeting and connecting with people I would have never gotten a chance to earlier because of classes, etcetera but definitely senior trip with my roomies.”
