What would do if you saw a UFO outside your window? Would you run and hide thinking of an alien invasion? The movie “District 9” took a different twist on an alien invasion. It portrayed the aliens as a species that came to Earth for help instead of taking over.

In the 1980s an alien spacecraft came to a halt over Johannesburg, South Africa. The aliens, referred to as “prawns,” were taken from their ship and placed in a small refugee camp to be settled for a short period of time. The camp is called District 9. The aliens were told that they were given the chance to leave when they wanted to, but the government had different plans when they found the aliens using their advanced weaponry.

Major governments from all the continents combined their greatest scientists to confiscate and test these weapons, which led to the creation of a group called Multi National United. MNU was formed to study the aliens, but there was more to the story. The alien weapons required alien DNA to be operated.
On a routine weapons raid Wikus van der Merwe, an MNU worker, became exposed to a form of alien DNA and was slowly changing into a prawn.

When the government found out about this transformation, they began to experiment on Wikus. He was able to use the alien weaponry and was then betrayed by everyone he loved, including his wife.

He was then set up to be killed and tested by the government when he escaped to District 9. I won’t reveal the ending, but let’s just say the the movie sets up a sequel.

I recommend this movie to anyone who likes science fiction movies.
