The soccer Rocks pulled out a huge win over rival St. Xavier at Trinity’s Marshall Stadium. The stands were jammed packed as students from both schools came to cheer on their soccer teams.
Trinity head coach Walter Mata, who resumed coaching the Rocks after a five-year break, marked his first meeting against the Tigers since a 1-0 loss in 2003. He came back with a 2-1 victory to mark the start of Pride Week 2009.
After the win Mata said, “It feels good. The most important thing was to see such good support from the students. It’s great to give this big win to the school. The school needs to be proud of the boys. They worked so hard for this.”
It was an offensive game for the Rocks, starting early with a goal by Kai Quahla five minutes into the game. The Tigers held their ground with a dominant defense to end the first half 1-0.
A goal by Sunny Jane started off the second half, putting the Rocks up 2-0. Later in the second half the Tigers’ Neil Henley punched in a goal, making it a 2-1 game.
St. X head coach Andy Schulten said of his players at halftime, “ I had to calm them down, tell them to come back in the second half quickly and be ready. We started off slow in the first minute then started to pick things up again.”
Mata said, “We had to score early in the game and move back to playing our own defense. The boys executed well. The seniors had yet to beat St. Xavier, so it was really special to them to get this win.”
Mata told his team at the half to “keep it up. Keep doing what we’ve been doing all year long.”
