Four Trinity seniors were named National Merit Semifinalists. Dale Erwin, Nathan Hay, Ben Hulsman and Nick Fischer were honored by the National Merit Corporation for their scores on the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test.
Trinity also had eight commended students: Max Burianek, Andrew Cook, Madison Cox, Thomas Ribar, Alex Roby, Patrick Tancula, Spencer Walsh and Alex Winrich. Senior David Berniard received a National Achievement Award.
The semifinalists expressed pride in what they accomplished but were also modest about the accomplishment. Hulsman described his recognition as “nifty,” and Hay said his award was “a neat accomplishment.”
Hay initially thought he did poorly on the test but later learned that he scored exceptionally well.
Fischer said he was glad about being a semifinalist and that it will look really good on his college applications.
Erwin is hoping to become a finalist--the next step in the process--because that is when he can get some scholarships to put toward college.
“I am proud of the education Trinity gave me and the opportunities that (education) has given me in the wide realm of college choice,” Erwin said.
